Somatics, the Creative Process and Perfomance
SCP is an experiential educational program, which utilizes movement/dance as a tool to access BodyMind knowledge-wisdom and expand the awareness of self as well as others.

Somatics

What is Somatics? „Soma“ is a Greek word, meaning body. Somatics is a practice that works with, through and within the body. The somatic method views the individual as a whole, encompassing the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects; hence, the unification of the BodyMind. Somatic-based practices have been present in many, if not all, cultures over millennia, manifesting as dance, martial art, theatre, ritual-performance, etc. These practices possess multiple functions to connect the individual to her/himself, to her/his community, to the cosmos and to life itself. Somatics provides the individual with the ability to deepen her/his presence to that moment in time and space, as well as to relate authentically to others.
Somatics has many applications in diverse fields of interest, such as in education, psychology, therapeutic, medical and artistic professions among others.

Creativity

Creativity goes to the very core of life. It is a pure expression of the life force. If  we are in contact with our own creativity, possibilities open up and limitations can transform themselves into inspirational states of mind.
We believe that as life informs our art, art informs and gives insight into our own life. Hence, life becomes an artful, soulful, creative journey.
Our approach to further and deepen creativity encompasses movement, dance, the spoken-word and voice.

Performance

As Shakespeare said,"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players..." Life is a performance, we play our roles in our daily lives, whether at work or at home, often unconsciously. Sometimes our performances are planned and choreographed, and at other times improvised on the spot, in that very moment. As in life, we sometimes perform as individuals but also as groups or as a duet. Life stories are the source for our creative expression in improvisational performance.

Methods

Methods that will be utilized in the SCP program include improvisational dance techniques, elements of Ideokinesis, experiential anatomy and Eastern mindfulness-based practices, such as meditation, Qi Gong and Swimming Dragon Tai Chi . Another important method that will be used in the SCP program is the Life/Art Process. This method was developed at the San Francisco Dancers’ Workshop, by Anna and Daria Halprin (Tamalpa Institute California), as well as teachers and students of this work all over the world.

Objectives of the Program

  • get to know and refine kinesthetic and sensorial awareness
  • develop an embodied presence through movement and mindfulness practices, that allow us to get in contact with unknown layers of the self, on the 3 levels of consciousness (physical, emotional, intellectual)
  • to develop presence, embodiment, or connection of the individual with the present moment and the activity or action they are engaged in
  • to cultivate personal experience and to apply this personal experience to those we work with
  • increase creative capacity and enhance performance skills

Who is the Program for?

It is a training where people from all walks of life could take something along. To be more specific for
people who are movement therapists, dancers, psychotherapists, teachers and people from the performance arts or
healing arts.
